A new 4K sky under UFMG’s 9-meter dome: SkyExplorer arrives at the planetarium

A University Planetarium Enters a New Dimension

The planetarium at Espaço do Conhecimento UFMG in Belo Horizonte has just completed a major renovation that profoundly transforms the experience offered to visitors. Located at the heart of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, this flagship space for science outreach now features a fully modernized 4K digital projection system, taking full advantage of its 9-meter-diameter dome. This new equipment represents an important step forward for a place where scientific mediation, culture, and innovation meet every day.

4K Projection with Unprecedented Clarity

At the core of this transformation, and implemented by the RSA Cosmos teams, the planetarium, already equipped with a starball, which remains in place, has gained two SONY GTZ380 projectors. These projectors provide high brightness, enhanced contrast, and faithful color reproduction, allowing the celestial dome to be projected with clarity and depth previously unattainable.

The UFMG planetarium now fully benefits from the advantages of a hybrid system. The new projectors bring significant gains in brightness and contrast, while the starball continues to render stars with exceptional precision. Together, they create an immersive solution that combines the best of both technologies for the 61 spectators welcomed at each session.

First Installation of SkyExplorer at the Planetarium

This renovation also marks a milestone: the first deployment of SkyExplorer, at the UFMG planetarium. The most powerful astronomical simulation software, developed by RSA Cosmos and enriched with new features each year, greatly expands the planetarium’s exploration possibilities. It offers the planetarium teams content with stunning realism and remarkable scientific accuracy. Combined with the power of the 4K projectors, SkyExplorer delivers a truly immersive experience to every visitor.

Smooth Operation with a Control Tablet

To support this technological upgrade, a control tablet has been integrated into the system. Designed for science mediators, it allows sessions to be conducted intuitively and comfortably. Navigation through the sky, smooth transitions between different environments, and the addition of educational or scientific content are all made easy with this touchscreen interface. It gives mediators the freedom to focus entirely on scientific storytelling and interaction with the audience.

A New Era for Science Mediation

By combining cutting-edge technology, an upgraded control interface, and the introduction of SkyExplorer, the planetarium takes a decisive step forward. It strengthens its central role in promoting scientific culture in Belo Horizonte, both for the general public and for schools and university students.

Under its 9-meter dome, the UFMG planetarium now has all the tools to inspire, amaze, and convey a renewed vision of the Universe. This renovation paves the way for richer, more dynamic, and more immersive programming. The planetarium reopened its doors to the public on November 20th.
